Sim Lim: A time capsule of electronics

The exterior of this building is unremarkable, its facade covered in plain concrete and glass, more akin to an office block or a local shopping mall. However, crossing the threshold, you suddenly find yourself in Sim Lim Square — a place that seems to transport you to another era, the dawn of electronics.

Associations come to mind of Soviet merchant navy sailors who were in search of the latest technical achievements to bring them home. And it’s not surprising if you can still find Sharp tape recorders on the shelves here, with their classic design and high-quality sound.

On my visit, six floors of electronics shops offered an extraordinary range: used computers, vintage game consoles, audio equipment, smartphones and plenty of objects I could not immediately identify.

In the era of online shopping, when almost everything can be purchased on the internet, Sim Lim has undoubtedly lost some of its former significance. But this market is not just a place to shop. It is a kind of time capsule that is worth a look for the pleasure of walking through its trading rows, exploring unique and forgotten gadgets. It’s a place where you can feel like a part of the history of electronics development, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of past decades.
